The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is the statutory body established under the Chartered Accountants Act 1949 that regulates the profession of Chartered Accountancy in India. Every CA is allotted a six-digit Membership Number; CA Firms hold a separate Firm Registration Number (FRN). Companies, banks, regulators and recruiters verify CA membership and Firm authenticity through the ICAI member portal — particularly important for statutory audits, tax audits, GST audits, bank concurrent audits and PSU panel empanelment. The portal also lists each member's standing — Active Member, Fellow Member, Suspended or Removed under Disciplinary Action.
