The National Medical Commission (NMC) — successor to the Medical Council of India under the NMC Act 2019 — maintains the Indian Medical Register (IMR), the master roll of every medical practitioner authorised to practise modern medicine in India. The IMR records the doctor's NMC Permanent Registration Number, qualification, year of qualification, university, state council where practising and any disciplinary action. Hospitals, employers, regulators and patients can verify a doctor's bona-fides through the public IMR search before entrusting clinical responsibility. Foreign medical graduates (FMG) registered after passing the FMGE / NExT also appear in the IMR. State Medical Councils remain the primary registering authorities; NMC consolidates their records.
