The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) issues every consenting Indian a 14-digit Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) number. ABHA is the unique patient identifier used to seamlessly access electronic medical records across hospitals, labs, pharmacies and insurers participating in the National Digital Health Ecosystem. The ABHA card carries a QR code that providers scan to fetch the patient's PHR (Personal Health Records) Locker after explicit consent. The National Health Authority (NHA) operates the platform and publishes verifier APIs for empanelled HFRs (Health Facility Registry) and HPRs (Healthcare Professionals Registry). ABHA is voluntary and self-sovereign — patients control which records get shared and for how long.
